Wow. Le Mans is a special event. I’ve been to Spa, the Nurburgring and Silverstone for their respective 24hrs, but none of them come close to this in terms of a spectacle. I would implore anyone reading, if you can get there, go. 2016 dates are already announced and its such a special event it is well worth any amount of effort to get there.

Enough words for now. High Res versions of all the pictures below are on my Flickr: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

This is the view from the banking inside Beasajour campsite. Not bad for 5 minutes from the tent.

Kinja'd!!!

VERY hot brakes were a recurring theme for the Nissans

Kinja'd!!!

As a Brit, I feel obliged to love the Astons, all 5 of them.

Kinja'd!!!

Thats not to say I’m not a Porsche fan. Far from it. The Stuttgart make should never be overlooked

Kinja'd!!!

Especially when the 911s big brother is this beast.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Summer Sunsets were pretty epic every night.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The LMP2s were always popping and banging down through the gears. The noise of a proper race car.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Notice the LMP1H dont have glowing brakes. I guess the hybrid systems are so efficent the brakes don’t get nearly as hot.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Where as the LMP1Ls brakes were glowing like everyone else.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Last sunset shot. Well from Wednesday anyway...

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The speed every car took launching out of the Forest Esses was something else.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Retro Nissan livery = WIN!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Lots of people there for a Qualifying session on a Thursday. In fact, every part of the event was always really busy. Total weekend attendance - 263,500.

Kinja'd!!!

The two new SMP BR01s running in formation.

Kinja'd!!!

Tet Rouge, the home of Track Limits warnings

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I’m a sucker for a ‘vette

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

AF Corse and one of their half dozen or so Ferraris.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Unpopular opinion time: I loved the Art Car livery. I think it looks really cool.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Sadly, fence is an ever present scourge of the Motorsport Photographer.

Kinja'd!!!

“Nothing good ever happens in Morning Warmup” - Hugh Chamberlin. The Larbre guys found that out the hard way. Not the way to start the Saturday.

Kinja'd!!!

Double trouble.

Kinja'd!!!

They know how to make it a big event, I’ll say that for Le Mans.

Kinja'd!!!

The madness begins. Prepare for 24 hours of fun.

Kinja'd!!!

SO MANY PEOPLE!

Kinja'd!!!

All 3 Nissans started, and got on with putting some miles under their wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

The team AAI Porsche 997 was the oldest car on the grid, but ran steadily throughout P & Q.

Kinja'd!!!

About the only time the 47 Oreca wasnt leading was for the first handful of laps.

Kinja'd!!!

The Toyotas just weren’t fast enough. But they ran like clockwork (bar Ant Davidson getting slightly to close to a Ferrari in the Porsche Curves)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Safety cars only compressed the action.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

More Arty goodness.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

#MurphysMen had a torrid Wednesday, with 3 corners missing from the car after Practise. Somehow they got the car out at 23.45 on Weds evening for some qualifying. Got their troubles out of the way early, and had a solid run through the race.

Kinja'd!!!

The 1 and only (works) Corvette. One bullet in the gun, but as Radio Le Mans pointed out, thats one hell of a bullet.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I like different cars, and the Viper was one of my favourites for the whole race.

Kinja'd!!!

Sadly, about as close as the Nissans ever got to the R18s.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The crowd didn’t really thin until 7 or 8pm, so was still very busy during the early running.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Nissans were running VERY low ride heights. So lots of sparks throughout the race.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Hunting in a pack.

Kinja'd!!!

Variety is the spice of LMP2.

Kinja'd!!!

Didnt manage to ever get all 3 Nissans in 1 shot, so 2 outta 3 aint bad.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The Larbre boys got their Corvette back together for the race, but there was more damage under the skin, and sadly it made it into the dusk hours before succumbing to a gearbox leak.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Slow and steady might win the race (spoiler alert, it didnt)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Even under safety car conditions the Aston was still hustling.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Audi had 3 or 4 areas like this for fans. The marketing spend for Audi, Porsche and Nissan must’ve been immense, where as Toyota had a very understated effort.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

New Ferris Wheel location was entirely popular with the regulars.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

However, Porsche have invested a huge amount in the race and the track, and placed their new Experience Centre where the wheel used to stand.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Dirty Corvette

Kinja'd!!!

Porsche leaving Porsche Curves. Ironically one of the points the Audi was the strongest car.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

LMP2 lights are bright. Who knew...

Kinja'd!!!

Overtaking round the outside on a flat out corner in the Porsche Curves. Because thats just how much aero grip the LMP1s have.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And then it got dark.

Kinja'd!!!

Another stunning sunset (which I mostly missed, whoops)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The racing didnt really get any calmer as the light faded.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Aston still very distinctive in the dark.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Safety car bunched the whole pack up as the last of the light disappeared.

Kinja'd!!!

The morning after the night before...

Kinja'd!!!

Dirty racecars = the best racecars.

Kinja'd!!!

Sadly the Sunrise was muted by a very grey cloudy sky, but as it rose higher the colour returned.

Kinja'd!!!

out at Mulsanne (after 2 buses and lots of waiting)

Kinja'd!!!

With the sun fully up, the remaining cars were still at maximum attack.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Considering this car had 3 corners knocked off it early in the race, it ran faultlessly from then on.

Kinja'd!!!

Viper still running, though it faltered in the final hours, with a transmission issue (I think)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

All the American Muscle left running at the point. You could hear this pair coming from a way off.

Kinja'd!!!

LMP2 presented a large traffic issue for the P1s.

Kinja'd!!!

Running like clockwork. Slow clockwork, but clockwork nonetheless.

Kinja'd!!!

Whoops. tired brain at Indianapolis.

Kinja'd!!!

And the poor marshals who came very close to being squished by a slightly, umm, less than careful extraction. This car won in GTE Am. Not bad considering this was at about 11am.

Kinja'd!!!

You can get VERY close to the cars at Arnage.

Kinja'd!!!

The Vette having its lat driver change.

Kinja'd!!!

With 35 mins to go, the GTE Am leader made its first mistake. And race over :(.

Kinja'd!!!

And the Winners. Im not sure if they are pleased or not.

Freehand, with a Canon 7D mark ii, and either a 100-400l or a 24-105l lens. I find using a Monopod more difficult for panning, so I just up the shutter speed and put the IS on when I want more clarity.

Actually, the reason why the Audi, Porsche and Toyotas don’t have glowing brakes is not the hybrid system, but that the brakes are fully enclosed in carbon fiber “brake drums” for more efficient cooling(less drag, less dirty air from the wheels).

I am seeing you switch between your iso and timing quite a bit, but your aperture remains around 5.0/5.6. Are you in aperture priority mode on the Canon? Also, are you enabling 3d focal point tracking? That’s the mode on my D90 to follow a fast moving target.

It ran quite well, but disappeared between 12 and 3. I think i remember hearing from Radio Le Mans that it had a transmission fault, but dont quote me on that. Was running well in GTE am early in the race.

Im using shutter priority (TV on Canon) and adjusting the shutter speed depending on the pan. I think the Apeture was wide open because I was using a Circular Polarising filter, and ISO was on auto with a Max setting, so free to move around

Very hot front brakes.

Seems like the rears are just along for the ride... Must be a weight distribution thing?

Granted, the rears don’t do a lot for braking anyway. But with all the weight up front they may being doing less than anything.

To my untrained eye it looked like he got a touch of oversteer on the entry to the first part of the Ford chicane, and the Astons don’t like going sideways. Once they have lost traction they are heading to an accident. Such a shame that late in the race, for 1 tiny mistake to cost you a class win.

If your camping its quite easy. You buy a general entrance ticket per person, a camping pitch which you can share (especially in Beausajour because the Pitches are not marked) and a grandstand or whatever.

Even going back to at least 08 but likely earlier you didn’t typically see the front brakes glowing on at least the R10 TDI is because Audi used aero covers to help keep the brakes in their optimal temperature range. Then once you add in the regeneration for the hybrid you really don’t see the glow.

You can see it on this picture I took at Laguna Seca back in 08.

Frankly, I’ll be very surpriesed if Toyota will do well, after seeing their liesurly pace at Le Mans in comparison to both flying Porsche as well as Audi cars. As obviously witnessed last Saturday and Sunday in Le Mans, Toyota has not even updated their WEC Championship-winning pair from last year, as Audi did.

So it appears, Toyota decided to put their efforts into their NEW CAR they are building to 2016 LM & WEC Regulations, as Audi is doing as well.

Only Porsche came into this season with a BRAND NEW car, therefore also Le Mans, as was the announced plan at the outset. Surely some perliminery parameters had already been agreed upon by ACO and FiA on the 2016 regs prior Porsche building this year’s challenger. Thus one would think they were already incorporated those into this years car, so P AG will not have to build yet another TOTALLY NEW car to those 2016-and-beyond regs cominf into effect.

Albeit quite experienced, 100% driver’s error, apparently. How devastating for ALL involved, that happening exactly 45 minutes from the end after a brilliant 23 hour 15 minute effort, especially when that team was __ LEADING the Class by F O U R L A P S __ ...

From what I know it’s a feature they borrowed from F1. Fully enclosing the rotors and metering the cooling air keeps them at peak efficiency even with the long straights at LeMans.

Read an EXCELLENT ARTICLE in AutoSport by Gary Watkins (long time member of the sports car commuinity, thus an excellent observer and reporter), about the NISSAN effort. He mentions NISSAN team, unable to harvest energy for their non-working hybrid system in the rear 9thus also not retard the car more), those originally intended to race with front brakes thus got very much overwhelmed. Since more braking power was needed, the team abandoned not only their smaller front wheels to fit larger brakes but also the specially developed for the car tires, further complicating their lives, ending up running Audi’s rear tires at higher pressures...

A VERY RARE photo from PORSCHE Racing Department in Weissach (where normally pics are PROHIBITED, for obvious reasons) at a start of 919 build-up. In the center is the BARE driver’s compartment, which is also the MOST IMPORTANT PART of the whole 919, as basically everything else attaches to it - the front structure, the engine with gearbox, side tunnels for coolers, the car’s full length floor and finally, those aero body components to make the final car.

In ‘08, R8 brake proportioning, from front to rear, was driver adjustable. When engineers saw differences in brake temperatures, they instructed the driver to make an adjustment. Some time drivers just did not do it right on the first try. But, eventually, even when set correctly, those fronts would glow a bit more than rears.

I’d be curious to know what exactly it is that breaks in a transmission like that. Is it bearing failure? Ground gears?

I love the electroluminescent numbering on the side of a few of those cars.

Great pics.

Predominantly, it’s the gearbox’s internal shifting mechanism that gives the most trouble - gears or bearings are normally not affected. Sometime, until they are fully developed, bear box cases and differential / final drive access plates could be cracking or braking as well.

Had Dodge not stopped their factory effort the Viper would have been in the Pro sub-division. 2016 would have been far more epic with the Three American Supercars running around Le Mans.

In 20-30 years from now, I wouldn’t be surprised if they used that term and looked upon this generation as fondly as we look back on the 80s and early 90s.

And don’t forget Porsche’s 918 Spyder- 919 Hybrid naming scheme. It’s not just for marketing- the 918 is pretty much made out of racing technology, from the LMP2 V8 to the hybrid systems. It’s trickle-down tech at its finest.

Driver adjustable brake biasing was around long before that, but that is not what is going on in the image I posted. If you look closely you can actually see a spot where the rotor isn’t completely obscured and it’s glowing nicely there.

See this page for more info. http://www.mulsannescorner.com/audir10-3.html It only makes sense Audi further improved on this technology with successive cars like the R15, R18 and now the current R18 hybrid Quattro.
